When Ross left, he was as angry at me as I’d seen him in a long, long time. In his mind, I had crossed a line. In my mind, he had.

“What’s the matter, Leah? You look like you just lost your best friend.”

My mother had come into the conference room carrying water bottles to put in the small fridge we keep there.

“Maybe not my best friend, but I think I just lost a good one. Ross.”

She put the water on the table and sat down next to me.

“Charlie? What happened?”

I realized then that I’d been running hither and yon so much the past few days that we hadn’t had a sustained, substantive conversation for days. I hadn’t even followed up with her like I’d said I would the day before when I’d seen her briefly with Donna and Ann Lynn.

“I’m trying to help Adam Harrison, Rachelle Crawford’s son. But things aren’t working out so well.”

I gave her a short synopsis about my commitment to help Adam and where it had led, and ended with my discovery about Liz.

“I don’t know which surprises me more. That Charlie is dating Liz, or that Liz was married to Bryan Crawford,” she said.

“Mom, he got so mad when I said he had to tell Coop. He went all kill-the-messenger on me and left. I don’t know if he’s going to tell Coop or not. And if he doesn’t, I have to.”

“This is not going to be easy on anyone—Charlie, Coop, Liz, you. I hope Charlie doesn’t do anything rash, like resign.”

“Congrats, Mom. You just came up with the one bad outcome I hadn’t thought of.”

“Sorry. What are you going to do now?”

“I guess go talk to Liz. I need to get confirmation from her, though I have no doubt she’s Tiffany Tubbs. Also, I’m sure she doesn’t realize what a bad decision it was for Ross to stay quiet about this. Maybe once she does, she can convince him to talk to Coop before I have to.”
